Athani village is located 40 km southwest of Lefkada town. It is built at an altitude of 380 m. it is known for its easy access to the famous beaches of Lefkada such as Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Gialos. You will definitely meet it on your way to the beaches and it will win you with its views.
Not far from the village is Cape Lefkatas, where in ancient times there was sanctuary of Apollo and it was called white stone or white Accra. From this came the name of the island, Lefkada. It is also called the Cape Of The Lady (or Nera). From there, according to tradition, Sappho killed herself (ancient lyric poet from Lesvos) because of the erotic frustration she had from Faonas.
Before the Cape of Kyra you will find hidden the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Nira. It was probably founded in the early 17th century, in 1637 or earlier. Today's temple is later. Its iconostasis is modern with its icons, which were made in 1799. Also, the despotic icon of St. Nicholas is painted in 1699. It is the oldest signed and dated portable image of Lefkada, which was stolen and found again in 1979 with many damage. The monastery has no frescoes. The last monk who practiced there died in 1949. The monastery was reopened in 2013 by 3 nuns who decided to completely renovate it and give it life again.
There are not few people who choose to stay in the village and enjoy their holidays. It is worth to sit until the time of the evening, since the sunset from Athani is impressive due to the view it offers and the colors that spread on the horizon.
