Melissa Gorge, which is part of the municipality of Sfakiotes, is located 2 kilometers outside and north of Kavalos Village and it extends to Apoplena. You can get there by car, starting from the city center and following the provincial road to Sfakiotes, which is only a 10 km drive! You’ll be surprised by the proximity of this magnificent site! So pack the essentials- hiking boots, water, some snacks for the hike- and of course- sunscreen, park your vehicle, and embrace the challenge: An adventurous 45-mins journey is about to begin.
As you enter the gorge, you will soon find yourself surrounded by the most characteristic traits of Greek flora- such as olive trees, plane trees, pines, and cypresses. Walk down the well-maintained path and don’t forget to breathe the fresh air and take in the beautiful spectacle. Ten minutes into hiking, you’ll get to see ‘Spilia’ ( Cave ), an impressive rock which forms an imposing cave. Watch the jewel-blue stream, and listen to its soothing calling. Help yourself and drink the refreshing, crystal-clear spring water. If you have enough time, we urge you to go on a picnic, it’s totally worth it!
A few minutes later, the walk takes you to the old remains of watermills, or footprints of the past- as I like to call them, that harmonize perfectly with the landscape. The contrast between the lush and dense vegetation and the faded colors of the watermills is the perfect occasion to take out-of-this-world pictures! The scenic route can be both uphill or downhill. Either way- it’s easily accessible. You’ll have to cross a couple of wooden bridges, but don’t worry about it! Even though they might give you an adrenaline rush- they are completely safe. The highlight is, of course, the small, yet beautiful waterfall, that someone would expect to meet only in spring. Well, good news! It sometimes has water even in summer! At the finishing point, you will find a wooden kiosk and benches where you can take a short break before you head back!
