Autumn in Lefkada
When you hear of the word “island” the first thing that storms into your mind is "the summer". Hot sand, fresh azure waters, deep dives, the sun burning your cheeks, saltness and bright red sunsets.
Lefkada is an island where one can enjoy both the joys of the summer and the sweetness of the fall, at the same rate: The long dives have now been replaced by the long walks among its forests, the grape harvest, the observation of the nature, the wandering among the villages, the strolls in the center of Lefkada, down the cloud-painted sky.
Hiking in the colorful nature of Lefkada is an amazing way to enjoy the Fall. A carpet well laid-out by the falling leaves, the smells of wet soil, the red, the yellow, the brown and the orange colors that shine bright, the extraordinary skies painted with brush works of clouds. Nor cold, not hot. It’s the perfect time to wander among the forests and the paths of the island, to follow the aquatic lines within the caves in the gorges, to observe the rare flora and to lose yourselves in the routes of the villages, or by the rivers, the bridges, the watermills, and the impressive abandoned monasteries. The perfect time to visit the "apple of the eye" of Lefkada, the gorge of Melissa, the beauty of which fills you with awe.
Enjoy the magic of nature during a walk down the wetlands at the northern side of the island, which form a habitat, or just a stop of the long trip to the South, of swans, cormorants, herons, and of other birds. Let your eyes rest at the sight of the calm waters, observe, take pictures or just relax by listening to the sounds and songs of the birds.
Lose yourselves among the vineyards. End to end and from the beaches to the slopes, Lefkada is filled with vineyards! Wander among the slopes of the island, the well-known "lithies", and live the ultimate experience of the grape harvest, listen to its song, smell it, see it. Touch the gold of nature, take part in the fest! Watch the procedure of winemaking at the wineries, and get your own wine. Have fun!
Ride a bike in charming routes among the olive groves. Listen carefully to the rustle of the leaves and admire the play that the silver and green leaves create. Take a sip of your coffee and enjoy the "gliko toy koutaliou" in traditional cafes which are located in the shade of centenarian and enormous plane trees and poplars, relax and stop the time.
Wander in the city of Lefkada with its special colors and its beautiful architecture, with the narrow alleys and the small, well-taken-care-of yards. Take a close look at the one-of-a-kind architecture; the galleries, the light wooden constructions, and the vivid colors.
Step in the churches that smell like candles, admire the hagiographies - some of which belong to top-notch Eptanisious hagiographers, the impressive wooden sculptures and their architecture.
Find your way to the central market, across which you'll find small, tin houses, a mark of the cultural inheritance of the Venetians, that host both shops and cafes.
Visit some of the three libraries or the Cultural Center of the city, which usually host art exhibitions (painting, sculptures, carving or photography.) Enjoy the tranquility of the movement and the calm pace of the city.
And of course don't forget to enjoy the wonderful beaches of the island, which are less crowded, with the clear-blue-waters, the waves, and which are painted with the warmest hues of blue.
Lefkada can be transformed throughout the seasons and yet remain exciting all year long.
